Off the Coast of Vancouver Island there stand magnificent centuries old Coastal Cedars, gray and imposing in an otherwise vibrant green landscape.

These cedars are formed over time by the live leader dying, most likely through direct salt exposure.  When this happens, the next lowest branch from the top curls up, and becomes the new tree leader.  This is repeated until you see magnificent examples such as this one standing confidently within the forest ecosystem.
